Internet coverage of university softball and baseball Web sites: The inequity continues | Academic Article individual record
abstract

This study extends previous research of media surrounding intercollegiate sport by examining the coverage of softball and baseball World Wide Web sites. Data were collected from National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I universities (n = 52) representing various athletic conferences (n = 7). Results indicate that, when compared to baseball, softball received inequitable coverage in the preseason as well as during the season. Regional differences are also noted as university sites from southern conferences apportioned less coverage to softball than did sites in the west, north, or east. These findings suggest possible social and legal ramifications for universities in the future. This study also reveals that discriminatory coverage of women's sport occurs both outside and within intercollegiate athletic programs.
